Glutathione (GSH) is a naturally occurring tripeptide composed of three amino acids: glutamine, cysteine, and glycine. It is the predominant low-molecular-weight thiol in animal cells and serves as the primary intracellular non-protein antioxidant.

Unlike single-function antioxidants that target only one aspect of oxidative stress, glutathione functions as a master antioxidant that directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species, regenerates other antioxidants, and participates in cellular detoxification. Glutathione is naturally produced within the human body, with the liver generating most of the body's supply. However, endogenous glutathione levels decline with age and under oxidative stress, making topical and supplemental application valuable for maintaining skin health
